Parents know that practicing and working with your child at home is important, especially when long weekends and school vacations come around. One of the problems families face is how to make at-home practice fun and engaging so your kids will actually enjoy doing it. One way is to blend traditional practice with online practice. Kids today are completely comfortable using technology and they love it! However, finding great websites that are free can also offer a challenge. Here’s one to try:
PBS Kid’s Island http://pbskids.org/island/
PBS KIDS Raising Readers and Kid’s Island is a site where kids can play free reading games and activities with their parents, teachers, and caregivers! As the kids play reading games, they earn tickets to buy their way onto other “rides” and earn prizes as they complete levels. The games are fun and you can control the level of challenge for each activity.
You can sign up as an individual or you can join the NSES group. When logging in, just enter Mrs. Lafreniere’s email address (firstname.lastname@example.org) and the password NSES. This will take you to a page where you can either find or enter your child’s first name and start playing. It is a fun way to connect home and school learning and it doesn’t require any huge planning time for parents.
