Learning, Leading, and Loving Literacy


Young children are taking on literacy at an amazing rate and many of them encounter a great deal of meaningful print in their home and community before they even come to school.  Kindergarten gives children the chance to solidify that early learning of language, alphabet knowledge, letter-sound knowledge, and early writing into a solid base for literacy learning.

Here at NSES, our students begin learning words early and master a core list of 45 sight words before the end of the year.  These sight words are words that should be read automatically so that they encourage the smooth reading of early texts.  For a list of the 45 kindergarten sight words we teach at NSES, click below:

In addition, our Kindergarten uses Kid Writing to start student writing early and often.  Classroom teachers often use trained volunteers to assist them during Kid Writing time so that more students can work closely with an adult as they write.  For a further explanation about Kid Writing, click below:
