Third grade represents a shift in reading. Before third grade, students are learning to read. In third grade, students shift and start reading to learn. More and more informational text is used and students are asked to go beyond the text to comprehend. In third grade, students independently practice skills including expanding vocabulary, deepening understanding and comprehension of text, decoding more and multi-syllabic words and increasing fluency to pull it all together. They often shift from read aloud to reading silently.
