Title I Parent Involvement Policy

NS Title I Parent Involvement Policy

North Smithfield Elementary Schools
Title I Parent Involvement Policy

Title I regulations require that each school served under Title I jointly develop with and distribute a written parental involvement policy agreed on by parents.

North Smithfield Schools (NSES/Halliwell) receive Title I funds to support struggling students and as such will:

• Hold an annual meeting for parents of Title I students to provide information about the Title I program and to explain requirements and parental rights. This meeting is held either in the fall or spring of the school year. Parents will be invited to the school to participate in this session and allow them to provide feedback on the Title I program.

• Offer a flexible number of meetings at flexible times. Additional opportunities are available for parents to provide program feedback. Such meetings will be held before and/or after school or in the evening.

• Involve parents in an organized, ongoing, and timely way in the planning, review and improvement of our Title I program and policy. This will take place through:
o Emails
o The district website/ school reading blogs
o School Reach
o Communication logs/Daily Planners
o School Newsletters
o Personal contact by Title I teachers

• Provide parents with a description and explanation of the curriculum, forms of assessment used to measure student progress, and proficiency levels students are expected to meet. This will be done through:
o Common Core State Standards outlined at fall Open House
o School Report Night
o School Committee presentations on standardized testing (i.e., PARCC)
o Standardized testing results shared on district website
o District Curriculum Website
o Standards based report cards
o Personal Literacy Plans

As a component of the parental involvement policy, NSES and Halliwell have collaborated with parents to develop a school-parent compact which outlines how parents, staff, and students will share the responsibility for improved student achievement. This commitment will be documented by:
o Distribution of the policy to families
o Surveys to gauge the effectiveness of the policy
To ensure the involvement of parents and to support a partnership between NSES/Halliwell Schools we will:
• Provide assistance to parents in understanding such topics as the Common Core State Standards, state and local assessments, Title I requirements, and how to help your child improve. This will be accomplished through:
o Parent workshops/ and or meetings
o Presentations on standardized assessments/ School Report Night
o Explanations of standardized assessments on district website
o Description of Common Core State Standards on district website
o Resources for parents about Common Core State Standards on district website

• Provide materials and training to help parents work with their children to improve achievement, such as literacy training and using technology. This will be accomplished by:
o Providing parents with appropriate books and strategies to use with their children as well as links to helpful web sites.

• Build ties between parents and the school. This will be done through:
o School Improvement Team meetings
o Parent conferences
o Open House
o School Report Night
o Annual Literacy/ Title I events

• Coordinate and integrate NSES/Halliwell’s parent involvement programs and activities with other community organizations. This includes:
o Continued work with the Kids Care program
o Collaborating with SELAC to provide jointly sponsored parent activities

• Ensure that information related to school and parent programs is sent to parents in a format and language that parents can understand. This will be done by:
o Using multiple means of communication (email, School Reach, notices, newsletters, reading blogs, etc.)
o Holding meetings at varied times and locations
o Providing support from translators when needed

This policy will be reviewed annually.
